On Wednesday night, a massive fire broke out in the University of Nairobi’s Taifa Hall, causing considerable damage to the facility, which also contains some administrative offices.
The fire apparently began in the kitchen of a restaurant within the hall and swiftly spread to other areas.
Social media videos captured the scale of the fire, with dense smoke and bright flames visible from across the university campus.
The fire prompted immediate intervention by emergency personnel, but it triggered a surge of looters who attempted to take advantage of the confusion.
Police were promptly dispatched to protect the area and prevent theft, while firemen worked tirelessly to contain the flames.
No injuries have been reported so far, according to the police. However, the property of an undisclosed value was destroyed.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently underway.
