The Kenya Forest Service confirms that more than 550 hectares of Aberdare forest have been burned by fire.
KFS said the inferno may have been started by human activity.
According to an official with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the government agency in charge of national parks, the fire started on Saturday night and was “moving very quickly.”
The Mount Kenya Trust, an organization dedicated to preserving Kenya’s forests, announced on Sunday that a crew has “gone up to assist with the bushfires in the Aberdares.”
The park, which is located in the Aberdare mountain range, is home to a variety of species, including leopards, elephants, and critically endangered black rhinos, as well as stunning waterfalls and thick bamboo forests.
The Aberdares are Kenya’s third highest mountain range, with a peak of little over 4,000 meters (13,123 feet).
Concerns have grown in recent days about a divisive proposal before parliament that would empower politicians to decide whether public forest may be carved up and sold to commercial interests.
