First Lady Leads Calls for Dignity and Inclusion Of Persons With Albinism

Kenya today joined the world in marking International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) 2025, with national celebrations held in Uasin Gishu County under the theme “Demanding Our Rights: Protect Our Skin, Preserve Our Lives.”

Gracing the occasion as Chief Guest, First Lady H.E. Mama Rachel Ruto reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity, dignity, and equal opportunity for all Kenyans. She hailed the recently passed Disabilities Act 2025 as a milestone in safeguarding the rights of persons with disabilities, including those with albinism.

The First Lady commended the National Council for Persons with Disabilities and KEMSA for the distribution of free sunscreen to over 3,800 persons with albinism, a critical step in protecting their skin from sun-related health risks.

“Let us unite to uplift the voices of persons with albinism, advocate for their full participation in every sphere of society, and inspire others to join this vital journey.”

Government Spokesperson Hon. Isaac Mwaura, a longtime advocate for disability rights, delivered a stirring keynote address, highlighting Kenya’s leadership in advancing the welfare of persons with albinism.

He pointed to expanded healthcare access, including SHIF coverage for skin cancer treatment, and increased public sector job placements as key victories.

“This is a reminder of our collective responsibility to uphold the rights, dignity, and well-being of persons with albinism and to create an environment of equality, protection, and respect for all.”

Uasin Gishu Governor H.E. Jonathan Bii also pledged continued county support for inclusive social programs and equitable healthcare services.

“Persons with albinism deserve to be heard, empowered, supported, and encouraged to pursue their dreams free from fear, shame, or stigma. We must all work to build a society where discrimination is not tolerated and every child with albinism can attend school without ridicule, and every adult can live and thrive without limitation.”
