The first suspect in the murder of British businessman Campbell Scott, who was killed in Kenya in February 2025, is set to appear before the Makadara High Court tomorrow to face murder charges.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), through the public prosecutor, has informed the court that following the conclusion of investigations, they have decided to charge Alex Mutua Kithuka with Scott’s murder.
At the same time, the ODPP has requested the court to release the second suspect, Albunus Mutinda Nzioki, after findings cleared him of involvement in the crime.
While closing the miscellaneous case before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina at the Milimani Law Courts, the ODPP asked that Albunus be released on the condition that he continue to report to the police and assist in ongoing investigations. Authorities are still pursuing two other suspects who remain at large.
Earlier in the investigation, police alleged that both Mutua and Albunus had lured Scott to a residence in the Pipeline area belonging to Mutua. Investigators believed Scott was killed there before his body was transported and dumped in Makueni County.
However, further investigation revealed that Albunus Mutinda may have been innocent, caught up in the situation merely due to his association with Mutua, without any knowledge of the murder.
Scott’s body was discovered by a local herder grazing goats near Makongo Forest along the Machakos-Wote Road. The victim’s hands and legs were tied, and his body had been placed inside a green nylon sack before being discarded in a ditch approximately 500 meters from Makongo Forest Viewpoint.
The herder reported the discovery to the local chief, who then alerted Mukuyuni Police Station.
Detectives also uncovered several attempts to withdraw money from the victim’s bank accounts in Nairobi, Voi, and Mombasa, suggesting a possible financial motive for the killing.
The murder case is scheduled to be presented before the Makadara High Court on March 26, 2025.
