Fishermen Conflicts Increase Due To Increased Use Of Outlawed Fishing Gears

Conflict has emerged between fishermen using the waters of Lake Victoria at Banana and Mainuga beaches in Rachuonyo North Sub County, Homa Bay County over the increased use of illegal fishing gear in the Lake.

Fishermen from Banana beach are accusing their counterparts from Mainuga beach of constant attack and destruction of their fishing gears while on a fishing expedition in the waters of Lake Victoria.

Banana Beach Management Unit (BMU) chairperson Adrian Obwaga says that their colleagues from Mainuga beach had put an illegal boundary in the lake weeks ago which has also triggered the conflict.

Obwaga says they have lost fishing gears at the hand of their colleagues from Mainuga and several fishermen from Banana beach have also been attacked during a physical fight over the use of illegal gears and fishing boundary dispute.

The BMU leader says they have reported the complaints to the relevant government authority but no action has been taken.

However, Mainuga Beach Management Unit chairman Moses Omondi has accused their colleagues from Banana beach of practicing illegal fishing, resulting in the conflict.

The fishermen have appealed to the county department of fisheries and county security team to swing into action to control the illegalities in the Lake.
