Five people have been killed following a tragic road accident at Kigio area along the Gilgil-Naivasha highway on Thursday night, June 27, 2024.
A police incident report indicated that the accident involved two public service vehicles (PSV) travelling in opposite directions. The deceased included two men, a woman, and two juveniles (a male and a female).
The police further revealed that 19 other passengers were injured in the accident and admitted at the Naivasha Sub-County Hospital where they are currently undergoing treatment.
According to the police, the accident was caused by reckless driving. One of the vehicles, heading to Gilgil to tow another vehicle, was overtaking dangerously when it collided head-on with a matatu belonging to Narok Sacco.
“The motor vehicle coming from the opposite direction overtook a fleet of mother vehicles and failed to return to its lane in time and it one of the PSV vehicles,” the police said.
The impact caused the private vehicle to roll multiple times before landing in a ditch.
All the people that died in the tragic accident were aboard the Narok Sacco matatu.
The police revealed that the deceased were taken to Gilgil Sub-County Hospital mortuary for preservation and identification.
The vehicles involved in the accident were towed to the Gilgil Police Station for further inspection.
