Five Thai farm workers abducted during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel have been released after being held captive in Gaza for almost 500 days. They were handed over to the Red Cross alongside two Israeli hostages, shortly after another Israeli hostage was freed.
The released Thai nationals—Pongsak Thaenna, Sathian Suwannakham, Watchara Sriaoun, Bannawat Saethao, and Surasak Lamnao—were all working in southern Israel when they were kidnapped during the attacks.
Thai Government Celebrates Release
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, expressed relief and joy at the news of their freedom, assuring the nation that her government was working closely with Israel to ensure the hostages are reunited with their families as soon as possible.
“The Thai government, including everyone here in Thailand, have long been waiting for this very moment,” she wrote on social media.
However, she also emphasized that one Thai national remains unaccounted for, adding:
“I hold on to my hope that the remaining Thai national will be released and returned to us safely and speedily.”
Families’ Long Wait Ends
For the families of the freed hostages, it was an emotional day filled with relief after more than a year of waiting. The conditions of the hostages and details surrounding their release negotiations remain unclear.
Thailand was among the hardest-hit nations in the October 7 attacks, with dozens of its nationals killed or taken hostage. The country has worked tirelessly through diplomatic channels to secure the safe return of its citizens.
As one Thai hostage remains missing, the government and families continue to hope for their safe return.
