Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohamed has firmly dismissed rumours circulating on social media suggesting that FKF Vice President McDonald Mariga has been removed from his position, calling the claims unfounded and misleading.
Reports emerged on Tuesday alleging that Mariga had been quietly ousted and replaced by Abdallah Yusuf, a co-opted FKF Executive Committee member and close ally of Hussein. The unverified claims sparked widespread speculation and concern among football fans and stakeholders, especially with Kenya set to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 in a few weeks.
In a swift response, Hussein took to his official social media pages to quash the rumours. “Kindly disregard misinformation circulating on social media. FKF is an institution guided by its constitution, which we strictly adhere to. Our focus remains on delivering a successful CHAN 2024 and raising the standards of Kenyan football,” he stated.
The FKF Constitution, under Article 41, stipulates that the removal of an elected official must follow a strict legal process. This includes a formal proposal by the National Executive Committee (NEC) or by at least one-third of FKF members, followed by a vote requiring a two-thirds majority. As of now, no such motion has been initiated or voted upon.
The controversy comes at a critical time for the federation, with preparations for CHAN 2024 nearly complete. The tournament marks a significant milestone for Kenya’s football scene, and the FKF leadership is keen to maintain focus and institutional stability amid heightened scrutiny.
With Hussein reiterating the federation’s commitment to transparency and due process, the FKF aims to redirect attention back to the game and ensure a smooth and successful hosting of the continental championship.
