At least six people have been killed in severe flooding on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali, officials said on Wednesday, as heavy rains inundated the capital Denpasar and disrupted access to the island’s international airport.

I Nyoman Sidakarya, head of Bali’s search and rescue agency, said torrential downpours between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning caused two buildings to collapse in Denpasar, killing four people.

In Jembrana, two more people died and 85 others were evacuated, according to Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency.

The agency’s chief, Suharyanto, said flooding remained widespread across Bali as of Wednesday, while videos shared on social media, though not verified, showed major roads submerged and traffic at a standstill. Around 200 rescuers have been deployed to assist evacuation and relief efforts.

Authorities said road access to Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport was severely limited, with only trucks able to pass. The disruptions came at a peak period for tourism on the island, one of Indonesia’s most popular travel destinations.

Heavy rains have also battered neighbouring East Nusa Tenggara province, where flooding killed at least four people this week, the disaster agency reported.
