Former Arsenal and Chichester City forward Billy Vigar dies aged 21

Chichester City forward Billy Vigar has died at the age of 21 after suffering a significant brain injury during an Isthmian League match last Saturday.

Vigar was injured early in the game against Wingate and Finchley, which was abandoned after 13 minutes. He was placed in an induced coma and underwent surgery on Tuesday in an attempt to aid his recovery. The club confirmed on Thursday that despite the operation, the injury proved too severe.

In a statement Chichester said: “Although this helped, the injury proved too much for him and he passed away on Thursday morning. The responses to the original update show how much Billy was thought of and loved within the sport. His family are devastated that this has happened whilst he was playing the sport that he loved.”

Vigar began his career at Hove Rivervale before joining Arsenal’s academy in December 2017 at the age of 14. He signed a professional contract in 2022 and featured in the club’s under-21 side as well as in the EFL Trophy. Loan spells followed at Derby County and Eastbourne Borough before he signed permanently for Hastings United in 2024. He moved to Chichester ahead of this season.

Arsenal paid tribute to their former academy player, describing him as “quick, powerful and fiercely determined.” The club highlighted his versatility, noting he even deputised in defence when needed. Arsenal added: “Billy will always be remembered for his love of the game and pride at representing our football club. Our deepest condolences go out to the Vigar family and his many friends.”

Derby also expressed their sadness, recalling his time on loan with their academy. Chichester postponed Saturday’s fixture against Lewes as tributes poured in across the football community.
