Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been released after spending more than 18 months in prison.

Lula was held in a prison in the city of Curutiba and was released after a ruling by the Brazilian supreme court that defendants should only be imprisoned if they have exhausted their appeal options.

The 74 year old was charged with corruption and was sentenced for more than 12 years in prison.

He led Brazil between 2003 and 2010.

He has also constantly denied the accusations leveled against him saying they are politically motivated.

Despite Lula being free he will not be able to vie for any office because of the cases against him that are pending in court.
