Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga Appointed Chairperson Of MUHURI Board

Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri) has appointed retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga to chair its board of directors.

Mutunga served as the country’s Chief Justice from 2011 to 2016, when he retired early to allow for the appointment of his successor.

Mutunga will now succeed long-serving chairperson Khelef Khalifa.

Muhuri stated in local dailies that Mutunga brings a grasp of human rights and the law.

Muhuri said Mutunga’s credentials will be critical in the pursuit of its mission of fighting impunity.

“He brings an immense wealth of experience especially in the civil society and human rights sectors,” the statement reads in part.

According to Muhuri, Mutunga’s track record of defending the law will help boost constitutionalism in Kenya.

Mutunga joined the Mombasa-based non-governmental organisation as a board member in 2021.
