Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga is mourning following the loss of his son, Athman Mutunga.
In a message on behalf of the Judiciary on Sunday night, October 13, Chief Justice Martha Koome expressed their deepest condolences to Mutunga and his family following Athman’s death.
“On behalf of the judiciary family and on my own behalf, I extend our deepest condolences to Emeritus Chief Justice (Rtd) Dr. Willy Mutunga and his family on the heartbreaking loss of his beloved son, Athman Mutunga
“We stand with the Mutunga family in grief during this incredibly difficult time. While words may never fully ease the pain of death of a loved one, we hope that the family finds comfort in the cherished memories shared with Athman,” the statement read.
Athman passed away at the Coptic Hospital where he was undergoing treatment.
The Chief Justice further wished them strength during this difficult time, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mutunga family, and we pray that Athman’s soul rests in eternal peace.”
Friends of the former Chief Justice also reached out to express their sympathies.
“I offer my deepest and heartfelt condolences to my friend former CJ Mutunga for the untimely passing of his son, Athman, at 50. I wish him and his dear family strength at this difficult time,” said Prof. Makau Mutua on X.
Controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna also condoled with Dr Mutunga’s family.
“Our sincere and heartfelt condolences, comrade Willy Mutunga on the passing of your son,” he shared.
In accordance with Muslim customs, the late Mutunga was laid to rest on Sunday in Kitui County.
