Former Likoni District Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) Charles Onyango Ka’galo was arraigned in a Mombasa court on Wednesday after being arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Ksh. 20,000.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) apprehended him at his rural home in Oyugis, where he had relocated following his retirement.
Onyango faced three counts related to abuse of office, soliciting, and receiving an inducement to refrain from charging a complainant involved in an ongoing criminal investigation.
The alleged offences reportedly took place at the Lovely Bar and Restaurant in Soko Mjinga, Mombasa County.
During the court proceedings, Anti-Corruption Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku presided over the case, where Onyango pleaded not guilty to all charges.
He was subsequently released on a bond of Ksh. 500,000, with a surety of the same amount, or an alternative cash bail of Ksh. 200,000. The case is set for mention on February 19, 2025.
The EACC underscored its commitment to tackling corruption in all forms, promising to pursue bribery cases with the same intensity as high-profile cases.
The commission highlighted the detrimental impact of corruption on essential services, emphasizing its role in eroding public trust in institutions meant to serve and protect the citizenry.
