Former Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugine Wamalwa Distances Himself from Dialogue Call

Written By Lisa Murimi

Former Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugine Wamalwa has become the latest Azimio-affiliated leader to reject calls for dialogue following anti-government protests.

In a statement on his Twitter (X) account, Wamalwa emphasized that the public’s outcry against dialogue reflects a broader sentiment among Kenyans who prefer concrete government action over talks.

Wamalwa urged the current regime to implement necessary austerity measures to drive significant changes across various government parastatals. “I agree with Kalonzo Musyoka that what Kenyans want is ACTION, not DIALOGUE, and we should not be used to sanitize this failed regime,” he asserted.

His statement follows Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s recent dismissal of the dialogue call. Musyoka, also using X, announced plans to convene a meeting with Azimio leaders to address the raised concerns. He reiterated his stance, emphasizing that sanitizing the current regime is unacceptable.

Martha Karua has similarly expressed opposition, highlighting the need for genuine goodwill from all parties for successful talks. She warned that the move for dialogue could be a trap.

The dialogue call emerged during the signing of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Amendment Bill, 2024. Despite participating in the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) talks, Wamalwa rejected the final report, criticizing it for failing to address the critical issue of the cost of living.

President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have agreed to start a six-day multi-sectorial forum on July 15, aiming to foster national dialogue and find lasting solutions to Kenya’s pressing issues.
