Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that his life is in danger, outlining a series of events he believes point to a targeted campaign against him.
In a formal letter addressed to the Inspector General of Police and copied to President William Ruto, Gachagua detailed multiple incidents dating back to late 2024, which he claims constitute threats to his personal safety.
He cited an incident on November 28, 2024, where he was reportedly attacked during a funeral service in Limuru, Kiambu County. Gachagua described the event as a failed assassination attempt and expressed concern that no legal action had been taken against those involved.
According to the former Deputy President, another troubling event occurred on December 19, 2024, when he says an unmarked vehicle followed him for more than 150 kilometers while he was in Makueni County. The motive behind the surveillance remains unclear, he said.
Gachagua also claimed that unknown individuals driving vehicles with concealed number plates have been trailing members of his family on various occasions.
On December 28, 2024, he alleged that a meeting he held in Shamata, Nyandarua County, was disrupted by what he described as an organized criminal gang. He claimed a tear gas canister was thrown in his direction, seemingly to disperse his supporters and create an opportunity for an attack.
Further incidents followed, including an alleged attack on his wife, Dorcas Rigathi, during a prayer rally at Kamukunji grounds in Nyeri on January 18, 2025. Gachagua said she had to be escorted to safety by private security forces. He noted that he had planned to attend the event but stayed away after receiving intelligence suggesting potential unrest.
“I stayed away as a responsible citizen to prevent a situation that could have resulted in national tension,” he said.
On March 23, 2025, Gachagua reported another incident, claiming a group attacked worshippers during a service he attended at ACK St. Peter’s Cathedral in Nyeri. He criticized police officers for allegedly standing by as the situation escalated.
In another claim, he stated that on March 29, 2025, police roughed up his supporters during a meet-and-greet event in Naivasha. Then, on April 6, 2025, at a church service at PCEA Kasarani East Parish in Mwiki, Nairobi, he said a group armed with crude weapons launched an attack.
Gachagua concluded by warning that if any harm were to come to him, he would hold a figure he identified as “Kanja” accountable.
