A former Kenyatta University official, Dunston Indimuli Okello, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison with an alternative fine of KSh. 4,922,000 by the Nairobi Anti-Corruption Court after being found guilty of abuse of office and money laundering linked to a fraudulent wheat flour payment.
Chief Magistrate Hon. E. Nyutu delivered the judgment, convicting Okello on both counts.
For the abuse of office offense, Okello was given the option of a KSh. 900,000 fine or seven years behind bars, along with an additional mandatory fine of KSh. 1,022,000. On the money laundering charge, he was fined KSh. 3,000,000 or face another seven years in prison.
The prosecution, led by Ms. Celestine Oluoch and Ms. Linda Otieno, successfully demonstrated that between August 20 and September 30, 2019, Okello, then in charge of the Central Food Stores at Kenyatta University, falsely confirmed the delivery of 200 bales of wheat flour worth KSh. 288,000.
He did so by signing Verification Certificate Serial Number 56888 for Metnetwork Solutions, despite no deliveries being made.
Thirteen witnesses were called by the prosecution to testify, resulting in Okello’s conviction.
