Former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel has died, a week after sustaining serious injuries in a road accident.
His family confirmed he passed away early Sunday morning while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he had been admitted in critical condition since the crash last Sunday.
Lempurkel, who served as Laikipia North’s representative in the National Assembly from 2013 to 2017, was a vocal defender of Maa rights and a prominent figure in pastoralist politics.
He built his reputation as a bold advocate for land rights, cultural preservation, and the protection of the Maa community’s way of life, often clashing with political opponents over issues affecting pastoralist livelihoods.
Born and raised in Laikipia, Lempurkel rose from grassroots activism to national prominence, winning admiration among supporters for his uncompromising stance on indigenous rights. During his tenure in Parliament, he consistently championed legislation and policies aimed at safeguarding grazing land, curbing displacement of pastoralist communities, and addressing historical injustices.
Even outside office, Lempurkel remained an influential voice. He was regularly consulted on matters concerning pastoralist affairs and was regarded as one of the most outspoken leaders of the Maa community. His commitment to unity among pastoralists across Laikipia, Samburu, and Kajiado counties earned him both loyal allies and fierce critics.
News of his death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, community elders, and human rights defenders. Speaker Moses Wetangula described him as a courageous leader who gave a voice to marginalized communities, while others remembered his fiery style and refusal to compromise on issues of justice.
Mathew Lempurkel’s death marks the loss of a passionate advocate and a key player in Kenya’s pastoralist politics. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
