Former Matungu Member of Parliament David Were lost his son in a night attack on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
The incident was reported at Obunga police station on Sunday morning after Hannington Were, 39, had died.
Hannington was in the company of his friend when they were attacked while walking towards the Mamba Hotel to buy food along Nyerere Road, a witness said.
His father said that the pair was rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).
However, Hannington was already dead.
“They decided to walk because there were no boda boda along the way. However, when they reached Makini School, they were attacked by boda boda riders. The hospital says he was dead at the time he arrived at the facility. He was stabbed twice in the back,” he said.
He had also been hit by a metal rod on the head.
He stated that his son, a compliance officer at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), had no known issues with his colleagues or within the community, noting that he was also not controversial.
Hannington’s wife was unaware he had left, as he neither walks at night nor drinks, according to the fierce politician.
“His wife was already asleep. She did not know that Hannington had left. Hannington is a very private person and does not always walk at night. I do not know what prompted him to leave,” he said, while urging authorities to heighten security in Kisumu amid rising cases of attacks.
Hannington’s friend is fighting for his life at JOOTRH after also sustaining severe injuries.
Police visited the scene and the hospital and announced investigations were ongoing to get the killers.
It is not clear if the attackers stole from the victims.
