NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Nairobi Provincial Police Officer Anthony Kibuchi has passed away at the age of 68 after a long battle with cancer.
According to his daughter, Catherine Nyawira Kibuchi, the retired senior police officer died on Tuesday at around 9:45 a.m. while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he had been admitted for the past three weeks.
“My father was first diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and had been fighting it until his passing on Tuesday,” Nyawira said in a statement to the press.
Kibuchi served with distinction across multiple regions during his law enforcement career, holding the position of Provincial Police Officer (PPO) in North Eastern, Nyanza, and eventually Nairobi, where he earned praise for his firm leadership and calm demeanor during turbulent times.
Colleagues and community members in his hometown of Kirinyaga County remembered him not just for his dedication to public service, but also for his generous spirit.
“He was instrumental in supporting many people in our area,” said Richard Mwangi, a family friend and neighbor. “A pillar in this community, and a man of dignity.”
Funeral preparations are underway. His daughter confirmed that Kibuchi will be laid to rest next Wednesday at his ancestral home in Kianungu village, Tebere Ward, Mwea Constituency.
“We are preparing for his burial here in his hometown of Ngurubani,” Nyawira added.
As Kenyans mourn the loss of a seasoned officer, tributes continue to pour in from former colleagues, civil servants, and citizens who crossed paths with the late Kibuchi during his decades-long tenure in the police force.
His passing adds to the growing list of public servants whose quiet legacies of service still resonate within local communities, far beyond the spotlight.
