Former primary school headteacher sentenced to 28 years in prison for defilement

Kamau had been a fugitive since February 2025, reportedly moving through different locations including Machakos and Chuka, where he worked at another school.

Thika Law Courts sentenced John Kamau, a former deputy headteacher, to 28 years in prison for defiling a 13-year-old pupil.  Kamau was found guilty of defiling the minor between April and October 2023 at a school in Thika West, Kiambu County.

Resident Magistrate Evangelista Kithinji ruled that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt, relying on the victim’s testimony, corroborated by medical reports and statements.

The magistrate emphasized Kamau’s position of authority and trust as a teacher, dismissing the defense’s attempts to blame the minor’s conduct as irrelevant.

Kamau had been a fugitive since February 2025, reportedly moving through different locations including Machakos and Chuka, where he worked at another school.

He was apprehended on January 23, 2026, at a hideout in Maragua, Murang’a County. Having been convicted in absentia in December 2025, the court upheld the 28-year sentence upon his arrest.

The victim’s family lawyer saw the ruling as a significant step towards ensuring child safety in schools.
This conviction aligns with Section 8(3) of the Sexual Offences Act, which mandates a minimum 20-year sentence for defilement of minors aged 12 to 15.
