Police have launched investigations into an incident involving former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, who was allegedly assaulted and had his vehicle vandalized outside a club in Nakuru Town on Friday night.
Malala, the scriptwriter of the controversial play Echoes of War, was reportedly attacked by unknown individuals shortly after his presence was announced by the club’s DJ.
Witnesses said a commotion erupted as some revelers began chanting anti-government slogans, leading to chaos in which Malala was roughed up and his Toyota Land Cruiser damaged.
The shaken former senator was eventually escorted out of the venue by supporters. His vehicle was later towed to Nakuru Central Police Station as investigations continue.
No arrests have been made, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
The incident comes amid heightened attention around Echoes of War, a politically-charged play centered on Kenya’s governance and the 2024 youth-led protests.
Initially disqualified from the Western Region Drama Festivals, the play was reinstated by a High Court ruling, allowing it into the national festival lineup.
However, fresh controversy arose on Wednesday when Malala was blocked from entering Kirobon Girls’ grounds.
Tensions escalated after Butere Girls, the performers of the play, declined to take the stage, citing intimidation and calling for Malala’s release after his brief arrest.
Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has denied claims of censorship, saying the government supports free speech, but expressed concern over political involvement in school activities.
The case remains under police probe.
