Four police officers were detained on Friday as part of the investigation into the disappearances of two Indians and their driver in Nairobi.
At least ten other officers from the now-defunct Directorate of Criminal Investigation’s Special Service Unit (SSU) have reportedly agreed to testify in the case, which is shaping up to be a major investigation into allegations of extrajudicial killings.
According to officials, the four were detained in various police stations throughout the city following a day-long interrogation of approximately 21 officers from the unit.
They’d been summoned to the Internal Affairs Unit offices, where their colleagues are looking into the case of Mohamed Zaid Sami Kidwai, Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan, and their driver Nicodemus Mwania Mwange, who were kidnapped near Ole Sereni and driven away in an unmarked car on July 24, 2022.
The four officers have now been joined in custody by two other civilians.
For the time being, police are looking into an abduction and conspiracy to commit a felony.
If they find evidence, they will almost certainly prefer murder charges against the officers and their co-accused.
The officers are expected to appear in court on Monday, where investigators will make a variety of applications to detain them further as the investigation continues.
