Four police officers have been arraigned before the Kajiado Law Courts in connection with a robbery with violence incident involving a Congolese national in Kitengela.
The officers, Police Constables Lincoln Ashioya, Tom Odero Abwoga of Muungano Police Station, Samuel Gathitu Ng’ang’a of Elwak Police Station, and Perminus Muiruri Kamau attached to DCI Kitengela, are accused of committing the offence alongside an accomplice identified as Erick, who remains at large.
The court granted each of the accused a cash bail of Ksh 50,000 after declining a prosecution request to detain them for 10 days to allow completion of investigations. They were further ordered to report daily at 7:00 p.m. to DCI Isinya.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on March 23, 2026, at around 9:42 p.m., when the complainant, Djuma Yasin Mumbele, was travelling from Namanga Border Point to Nairobi. He was allegedly approached by a man identified as Erick, who lured him with a promise of securing a buyer for his diamond necklace in Kitengela.
Upon arrival at Kitengela main stage, the complainant was directed to a vehicle, registration number KBK 771Z (Suzuki), where individuals posing as prospective buyers were waiting.
The court heard that after handing over the necklace for inspection, two men forcefully entered the vehicle and attempted to handcuff him. Members of the public intervened, rescued the complainant, and apprehended one suspect, who was escorted to the police station alongside the victim.
The suspects are alleged to have robbed the complainant of a diamond necklace valued at USD 1,905, as well as USD 3,000, EUR 300, and Ksh 500.
The complainant sustained injuries to his neck and back and was treated and discharged in stable condition at Kitengela Level Four Hospital. The vehicle used in the incident was recovered and is being held as an exhibit.
Investigations further revealed that the officers are also wanted by detectives in Embakasi in connection with a separate robbery incident. Prior to their arraignment, they were subjected to an identification parade, which reportedly yielded positive results.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) clarified that one of the accused, PC Samuel Gathitu Ng’ang’a, was off duty at the time of the incident and is not part of the Deputy President’s close protection unit, contrary to reports circulating in sections of the media.
