The Central Organisation of Trade Unions-Kenya (COTU-K) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has announced some changes in its top leadership.
This follows the election of Rev. Joel Kandie Chebii as the new Chairman General of the workers’ body.
Similarly, Wycliffe Nyamwatta who served on the board of COTU will deputise Rev. Kandie as the 2ND Vice Chairman General.
The trade unions executive board voted in Rev. Kandie to the position of Chairman General following the demise of Rajabu Wellington Mwondi.
Atwoli who announced the new changes called on the new leaders continue championing for the improvement of Kenyan workers’ rights and well-being.
“Stability is key to any organization and, as COTU (K), we shall continue ensuring that the Union is united and stable so as to serve Kenyan workers,” said Atwoli.
Atwoli further provided details during the meeting regarding the ongoing preparations for the upcoming 5th Congress of the International Confederation of Trade Unions (Africa), known as ITUC-Africa.
This Pan-African trade union organization, headquartered in Lome, Togo, was formed in November 2007 through the amalgamation of two previous African trade union entities, namely ICTU-Afro and DOAWTU.
The efforts towards ensuring the success of this congress have been actively underway.
“COTU (K), which is affiliated with the ITUC-Africa, is privileged to host the 5th Congress of the ITUC this year whereby more than 500 Delegates (from across Africa and outside Africa), including Trade Unionists and leaders in the Labour Movement,” said Atwoli.
“The participants of the will come together to, foremost, discuss the future of Labour in Africa and the role of trade unions in shaping and facilitating the attainment of a better Africa.”
