The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), led by Francis Atwoli, called for an amicable truce between the government and the opposition on Saturday, March 18, as the country prepares for protests on Monday, March 20.
COTU’s deputy secretary general, Benson Okwaro, urged dialogue between President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as a remedy for rising political tensions.
“We urge both parties to engage in active dialogue in order to find a long-term solution that will promote the country’s economic development,” Okwaro said.
COTU also warned its members not to skip work on the demo day because it is not a public holiday.
“As the umbrella body for workers, we wish to remind workers to secure their jobs by reporting to their workstations,” stated Benson Okwaro. “We urge workers to refrain from participating in any activities that may jeopardize their employment status,” he added.
COTU leader Francis Atwoli and his deputy left Azimio La Umoja to back the government. Atwoli, who harshly criticized Ruto in the years leading up to the 2022 General Election, reached an agreement with both parties forgiving each other.
Since then, Atwoli has advocated for the government’s agenda while also championing workers’ rights.
Raila illegally declared Monday a national holiday on March 14. Only the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior has the legal authority to declare and gazette holidays.
