From Classroom to CHAN: Austin Odongo’s Meteoric Rise to the National Stage

Just a year ago, Austin Odongo was preparing for his national exams in Homabay County. Now, the 19-year-old midfielder is preparing to represent Kenya at the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), completing a stunning rise from schoolboy football to international competition.

Odongo, who recently completed Form Four, has been named in Harambee Stars’ final 25-man squad for CHAN, a tournament exclusive to players competing in domestic leagues. His call-up comes after an impressive debut season with Shabana FC, where he netted seven goals and provided two assists during the second leg of the Kenyan Premier League season.

“I was really delighted when I received the call-up,” Odongo said. “It was a great reward after a good first season with Shabana. I feel ready to give my all for the team if given a chance.”

His journey began at a Ministry of Sports youth tournament, where he captained Homabay County to victory and drew attention from top-tier clubs. Choosing Shabana for his debut campaign, Odongo quickly proved his potential and earned a reputation as one of the league’s most promising young talents.

Previously included in Kenya’s provisional squad for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations but missing the final cut, Odongo is now set for a second chance at national glory, and potentially his debut on the continental stage when Kenya opens its CHAN campaign against DR Congo at Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.

Nicknamed the “Last Born” of the squad due to his age, Odongo embraces the moment as more than just a personal milestone. “Playing in CHAN is a huge platform. You never know who’s watching, and it could be the gateway to the next stage of my career,” he said.

With CHAN 2024 providing a spotlight for emerging talent, Odongo is poised to become not just a player for Kenya’s future, but one making an impact in the present.
