From failed audition to senior anchor

It has never been a smooth sailing for one Waihiga Mwaura who revealed that behind the awards and senior post lies deep passion just like any other journalist that helped him navigate the industry. He spoke of the first time he auditioned for a show at Citizen TV only for him to be turned down because he was not dressed for the occasion.

“It was a kids show but I had worn a suit and tie,” the people manning the auditions took his number and later contacted him for a different show in the station and then eventually got an opportunity to feature on the power breakfast show.

It was while he was working at the power breakfast show he got to meet the veterans in the game the likes of Mutegi Njau, Kobi Kihara Johnson Mwakazi and he credits them for mentoring him.

He was trained to tell sports journalism and he decided to do more other than just give results and predictions or statistics of a match

In 2012 he worn a CNN multi choice Africa award for a creative story h he did on maasai morans who took up cricket in the fight against FGM and spread of HIV/AIDS .

“I wanted to tell sports stories to a wider audience and that’s why I pursed the Maasai Morans which ended up winning the award. He also added that he was not experienced at the time and he still worn the award.

In 2018 he worn the BBC Komla Dumor award where he went for an internship for 3 months at the main BBC headquarters in London.

In September 2020 he was appointed the new special projects editor for Citizen TV which include features, investigative stories and also planning for special events.
