From Washington to Nairobi: Al Gore Joins Kenya’s Green Revolution

Written by Lisa Murimi

Former U.S. Vice President and climate advocate Al Gore is set to visit Kenya from June 12 to 14 for a historic Climate Reality Leadership Corps training — the first of its kind in Kenya since the initiative began nearly two decades ago.

The two-and-a-half-day training in Nairobi will bring together climate leaders from across East Africa to explore Kenya’s strides in clean energy, assess global climate efforts, and spotlight the region’s critical role in the fight against climate change.

Gore will address participants on the climate crisis and advocate for stronger global accountability and local action.

He praised Kenya’s leadership in clean energy, noting that,

”Kenya is at the forefront of the world’s efforts to solve the climate crisis. The impacts of the crisis in Kenya are having profound consequences that worsen food insecurity, increase energy burdens, and displace people from their homes. At the same time, Kenya has become a global leader on clean energy, showing countries around the world how climate action can work at the local and national level.”

The training comes amid record-breaking droughts and floods in Kenya, which have heightened food insecurity and displaced thousands.

Discussions will also focus on closing climate finance gaps and unlocking funding to support resilience and renewable energy projects.

This marks Gore’s first visit to Kenya and comes just weeks after Finnish President Alexander Stubb’s upcoming historic state visit — the first by a Finnish head of state since Kenya’s independence.

While Gore’s meeting with President William Ruto has not been confirmed, his presence is expected to amplify global attention on Kenya’s climate leadership and catalyze deeper international engagement in Africa’s green future.
