A man accused of assaulting his wife over a domestic disagreement involving KSh 50 has been charged at the Thika Law Courts in a case that has stunned Ngoingwa residents.
Francis Njoroge, a resident of Ngoingwa Estate in Thika West, appeared before the court on Friday, facing charges of assault after allegedly attacking his wife, Mary Njeri, on the night of July 1, 2025.
According to court documents, the 8:30 p.m. incident escalated after Njoroge came home and asked his wife for KSh 50 to buy cigarettes.
Mary, who reportedly only had KSh 15, handed him the small amount prompting what prosecutors described as an unprovoked and violent reaction.
The prosecution told the court that Njoroge became furious and slapped Mary in the face. She later sought medical attention and was issued with a P3 form, which confirmed visible injuries resulting from the altercation.
But in court, Francis offered a different version of events. He admitted to slapping his wife—“only once,” he said—adding that the situation had been emotionally charged due to an unrelated family issue.
Njoroge claimed he was upset because Mary had allegedly taken their 20-year-old daughter from her marital home and sent her to work as a nanny, without consulting him.
Despite his explanation, the court took the assault charge seriously.
The magistrate granted Njoroge a bond of KSh 30,000 or a cash bail of KSh 15,000, pending the next hearing. The case is still under investigation, and a full trial is expected in the coming weeks.
