Chief Inspector Gabriel Mbiti Mulei is expected to hand over Sh10.5 million in four bank accounts, seven parcels of land worth Sh19.4 million, five vehicles, and one motorcycle.
The EACC is pursuing a traffic police officer with a monthly salary of Ksh. 20,000 and assets worth Ksh. 30 million from an unidentified source.
The officer must forfeit the properties and money within 30 days, according to the high court judge.
After an appeal by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Justice Njoki Ndung’u presided over the traffic base commander.
The judge ruled that the defendant failed to provide proof of his wealth apart from his Ksh 20,000 salary.
The officer was found in possession of plots of land, five vehicles, one motorcycle, and money totaling Ksh10.4 million in four banks.
The seven pieces of land are spread across Malindi, Kwale, and Mananja. The officer denied owning land in Malindi and Kwale, but claimed to have purchased plots in Mananja.
Despite his five-figure salary, Justice Njoki asked the officer to explain the source of his wealth.
She ruled, “The properties of the subject of this suit, as well as the deposits in his bank accounts, raise questions with respect to their sources. I am satisfied, on the evidence placed before me by EACC, that the officer has unexplained assets.”
