Gachagua Allies Demand Disclosure of Recent Government Deals Over Public Seal Custody Concerns

A section of political leaders allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have raised concerns over the government’s transparency, demanding full disclosure of recent agreements signed by the State. The call comes amid controversy surrounding the current custodian of the public seal, a critical symbol of legal authority in government dealings.

Addressing the public at Kairuri Grounds in Embu, the leaders accused the Executive of operating outside the law after it emerged that the public seal had allegedly been transferred from the Attorney General’s Office to the Office of the Head of Public Service.

The revelation was initially made by Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, who later retracted the statement, attributing the confusion to misinterpretations arising from a bill currently before Parliament. Traditionally, the Attorney General is the designated custodian of the seal, which is affixed to all official government agreements after thorough legal scrutiny.

“Ile seal inawekwa kwa Attorney General. Kama hajapiga muhuri, anaangalia agreement, anasoma sheria, apeane opinion,” stated Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa. “Sasa ikiatiwa rais, yeye atasoma sheria? Si ataweka tu muhuri?” he questioned, expressing skepticism over the legal soundness of any agreements approved without the Attorney General’s oversight.

Echoing similar sentiments, Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji announced plans to raise the matter in Parliament. “Hii ni swali nitapeleka bunge tujue kama hii kitu iko na Head of Public Service. Aliichukua lini? Na atuambie tangu achukue ameweka stamps ngapi,” Mukunji said, warning that the issue could be linked to potential backdoor dealings that risk compromising national interests.

The leaders insisted that unless the government comes clean on the number and nature of the agreements signed under the new arrangement, the integrity of the country’s governance processes remains in question.

The Attorney General’s Office has not yet issued a formal statement on the matter.
