Gachagua: I Helped Uhuru Win Presidency, I Have Never Lost an Election

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has expressed pride in his contribution to former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s political success, saying he played a key role in helping him ascend to power.

Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Gachagua reflected on his years as Uhuru’s personal assistant, describing the experience as one of the most rewarding periods of his political career.

“I worked for Uhuru Kenyatta from 2001 to 2006 as his personal assistant in charge of politics and mobilisation. During his first bid in 2002, we knew he wouldn’t win; it was just a strategy to anchor him for greater things later,” Gachagua said.

He added that the experience helped shape his understanding of political organisation and leadership. “It is a journey I am proud of, part of my resume of making presidents. We pushed on, and he became president for 10 years. I am happy for the role I played,” he said.

The former deputy president praised Uhuru as “a listening leader who respected the people he worked with,” noting that his time under him offered valuable lessons he still applies in his leadership today.

Gachagua also dismissed reports of tension between himself and the former president, saying political rivalry should not be mistaken for personal animosity.

“Campaigns have no rules. Campaigning is not a church affair, and nothing said was personal,” he stated.

He compared his situation to that of Uhuru and William Ruto, who, despite past political clashes, later worked together. “It’s all part of the game,” he said, adding that leaders must rise above divisions and collaborate for Kenya’s progress.
