Gachagua–Kalonzo Rift Highlights the Toll of Tribal Politics

By Michelle Ndaga

The escalating war of words between Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka have stirred fresh debate on the deep entrenchment of tribal politics in Kenya. What began as coalition talks and public gestures of support especially during Gachagua’s impeachment has collapsed into mutual accusations over tribal politics, now dubbed “Cousin’s Betrayal.”

Kalonzo publicly ruled out any alliance with Gachagua, accusing him of making divisive remarks that could incite Kenyans along ethnic lines for political gain. Gachagua hit back swiftly, “Kalonzo cannot lecture me on unity when his own political career survives on tribal alliances.”

Analysts say the fallout serves as a cautionary tale for even the most seasoned politicians alliances built on ethnic loyalty can unravel abruptly and painfully. Observers note that the clash comes at a politically sensitive time, as parties begin maneuvering for the next general election.

Analysts warn that the dispute underscores the fragility of Kenya’s coalition politics and the persistent influence of ethnic identity in determining political alignments factors likely to shape the country’s political landscape in the months ahead.
