Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has condemned the Supreme Court ruling that allowed LGBTQ+ members to register an NGO in Kenya.
According to the second-in-command, people have been wondering why he (Riggy G) ‘a self-styled truthful man’ has yet to comment on the LGBTQ matter.
Speaking during the launch of the Women Enterprise Fund and second product of the Hustler Fund at KICC on Thursday, Gachagua stated that they were shocked by the ruling and that it was against the country’s morals and traditions.
“Mimi nilishangaa nikashindwa kuongea, unajua unaweza shangaa ushindwe kuongea? ” DP Gachagua posed.
Yale maneno tunasikia pale kotini, ati kuna chama ya kutetea ati wanaume waoe wanaume, na wanawake waoe wanawake… sasa hiyo ni mambo gani hiyo?”
The DP argued that although the government has no issues with the courts, they will not accept the LGBTQ matter as it is ‘satanic’.
“President Ruto is God-fearing, he’s a man of faith, he will do what needs to be done. In any case we have our traditions and customs and what they are suggesting is repugnant to morality and our way of life,” he added.
Gachagua’s remarks came shortly after the Supreme Court ruled that denying LGBTQ+ people the right to register as non-profit organisations was discriminatory.
This followed a lower court ruling in 2013 that barred the Kenyan community from registering an NGO to advance their rights.
Human rights activists hailed the decision as a watershed moment for LGBTQ+ rights in Kenya, where homosexuality is still illegal under colonial-era legislation.
Some political leaders, however, have claimed that the ruling violates Kenya’s constitution and Christian values.
