Gaitho: Why The Police Were After Me

Francis Gaitho, a prominent Kenyan social media personality, presented himself at the DCI Headquarters in Nairobi yesterday.

Gaitho was taken in for questioning over a tweet he posted regarding the Kware massacre, which has been linked to a complainant who claims to have been identified in the social media post.

According to an official statement from Gaitho, he was accompanied by his lawyers, led by Senior Counsel John Khaminwa, Dudley Ochiel, and Austine Katinya, during the interrogation.

Gaitho said he has agreed to comply with any civil relief measures that the complainant may pursue, including retracting the tweet and issuing an apology.

In his statement, Gaitho also called for the release of his fellow protestor, Ali Nur, who was arrested around the same time as him, as well as all other protesters still missing or behind bars.

The Kware massacre occurred on July 13th, 2024, and left several people dead and many more injured.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.

The DCI has arrested a prime suspect in the serial killings, one Collins Khalisia. Collins, according to the DCI has confessed to 42 murders including that of his wife.

However, Francis Gaitho on his platform, disputed the findings, offered a contradictory argument claiming the suspect was ‘fake’.

The DCI took offense with his statement, sending out a unit after the blogger. The sleuths ended up intercepting a veteran blogger Macharia Gaitho, in a dramatic abduction at the Karen Police station.

In their public apology, DCI director Mohamed Amin said the ordeal was a case of Mistaken identity, as they were looking for Francis Gaitho.

Today, Gaitho was arraigned at Milimani Law Courts to answer to charges related to publishing false information claiming the DCI arrested the wrong person as the prime suspect in the Kware killings.

He was released on a cash bail of Sh30,000. His case will be mentioned on August 1.
