Garisa governor Ali Korane has been released on a Ksh 3.25M cash bailor SHs 5 million bond.
In granting bail, Ogoti said he had considered the fact that there was no loss of money disclosed in the charge
The prosecution did not oppose bail but asked the court to give the accused stringent bail terms.
Assistant DPP Alexander Muteti was granted his request that judge barred Korane from accessing his county offices
He further the ordered the accused to deposit his passport in court.
His other 4 co-accussed county officials were also granted cash bail of Ksh 1.2 million and barred from accessing their offices.
The governor and co accused were facing corruption charges involving shs 233 million. from the World Bank-funded Kenya Urban Support Program me.
The governor and four others were charged with conspiracy to commit an economic crime of fraud.
They all denied charges and the defense lawyers have a task to prove their innocence.
In the preliminary submissions Korane’s lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi said
“There is no crime in this charge sheet. There is no charge that says the money was lost or stolen. We will show in the trial that there is no offense as claimed by the prosecution,” he said.
However, Garisa governor joins the ever growing list of governors facing graft cases and barred from their offices, others include Nairobi Mike Sonko, Samburu Lenolkulal and embattled Migori governor Okoth Obado.
