On Sunday afternoon, a trailer hauling gas cylinders exploded, closing a portion of the major Nairobi-Maimahiu road.
According to witnesses, the trailer was involved in a collision around 6 a.m., but it erupted into a tremendous ball of fire and smoke during efforts to remove it from the Mutarakwa part of the road on Sunday afternoon.
According to multiple videos published online, onlookers remained at a safe distance as the trailer smoldered, converting everything in its area to soot and ashes.
Four private cars were among those burned to ashes by the massive fire, while the actual number of people injured during the blaze is unknown.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) urged motorists to lias with Traffic Marshalls in using other routes.
“Following the explosion of a lorry carrying LPG gas at Mutarakwa Shopping Center along the Limuru – Maai Mahiu road, motorists are advised to use alternative routes as efforts are underway to clear the road for normal use.”
