CAIRO
The crucial Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt showed signs of renewed activity Sunday, with Israel announcing a move toward resuming limited travel after years of near-total isolation for the Palestinian territory.

Reopening the crossing is a key step as a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas holds.
Israel’s military liaison to the Palestinians, COGAT, said Sunday the crossing had opened for a test run and was being prepared for fuller operation, adding that Gaza residents would begin to pass through once preparations were complete.

An Egyptian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Palestinian security officers passed through the crossing’s Egyptian gate toward the Palestinian side to join a European Union mission that will supervise movement. Ambulances also crossed.
The head of Gaza’s new Palestinian administrative committee said travel in both directions would begin Monday.
