Gaza Death Toll Nears 55,000 as Hospitals Warn of Collapse Within 48 Hours

The death toll from Israel’s war on Gaza has risen to 54,880, with 126,227 injured since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7, 2023, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

In its latest update, the ministry revealed that 4,603 Palestinians have been killed and 14,186 injured since Israel resumed military operations in March 2025, breaking a temporary ceasefire.

In just the past 24 hours, 108 Palestinians were killed and 393 wounded as Israeli attacks intensified across the besieged enclave.

One of the latest strikes targeted a tent sheltering displaced civilians in al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis, killing at least one person and injuring several others, according to reports from the Wafa news agency. Another air raid in Abasan al-Kabira, east of Khan Younis, injured two more.

Meanwhile, Gaza’s health infrastructure is on the brink of collapse. Dr. Munir al-Bursh, Director of the Gaza Health Ministry, sounded a dire warning in an interview with Al Jazeera, stating:

“Within 48 hours, Gaza’s hospitals will turn into graveyards due to fuel shortages.”

He blamed Israeli forces for blocking fuel entry into Gaza, calling it “a death sentence for hospitals.” He also highlighted a severe shortage of medicines and supplies, stating that emergency plans had been exhausted.

“We call on international and Islamic organisations to intervene immediately. WHO trucks are waiting in Arish, Egypt, but have not been allowed in,” he added.

As Israel continues its offensive, humanitarian agencies warn of a spiraling crisis, with hospitals unable to function, thousands displaced, and disease and starvation threatening to take more lives beyond the battlefield.

Calls for an urgent humanitarian corridor grow louder as Gaza’s health system teeters on collapse.
