Chief of the Defence Forces Gen Robert Kibochi was on a three-day project inspection tour.
He inspected the rehabilitation of the Longonot -Mau Summit- Kisumu- Butere railway line, the construction works at the Kisumu Shipyard, the progress of the Wagon Ferry construction, the dredging at the Kisumu Port and the Mbita causeway.
The inspection tour commenced on Saturday by train on the Meter Guage Railway line from Longonot train station to Mau Summit railway station with a stopover at the Nakuru, Londiani, Fort Tenan, Kisumu, Kisiani, Luanda, Lela, Butere railway stations as well as the Eldoret, Kitale railway line.
During the tour, the CDF was accompanied by the Managing Director Kenya Railways Mr. Daniel Mainga, Maj Gen Stephen Radina Commander Border Security Command, and senior officers from Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and Kenya Railways (KR).
The national railway lines rehabilitation project is undertaken within a Multi-Agency framework bringing together Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Railways, National Youth Service, national and local administration across all the counties where the railway line is placed.
Some of the cumulative works done include; building of bridges and culverts, restoration of drainage structures, replacement of dented worn-out, obsolete, dented sleepers, and rails, geometry correction, rail alignment, backfilling of railway line areas, renovation of buildings along with the stations, fencing at the Naivasha and Nakuru Station, replacement of missing fittings and fasteners.
At the Kisumu Port, the CDF was briefed on the construction of the 2nd shipbuilding area, the progress of the construction of the wagon Ferry MV UHURU II.He also toured the dredging sites at the Kisumu Port and Mbita Causeway.
