Nairobi’s CBD came to a standstill on July 18, 2025, when businessman and matatu culture enthusiast George Ruto officially launched his latest public service vehicle (PSV) named “Mood.” The event, held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC), attracted thousands of youth, matatu lovers, and curious onlookers, all eager to witness what’s now being called Kenya’s most luxurious matatu.
“Mood” is a 25-seater minibus that cost a staggering KSh 14 million to build and modify. It features a range of high-end features that make it more than just a means of transportation—it’s a full entertainment and comfort experience on wheels.

The matatu includes; bucket seats with cup holders and USB charging ports, Push-to-start ignition system, full air conditioning, Solar-powered energy backup, two giant 65-inch TVs, a KSh 2 million sound system that delivers powerful-high-quality audio, unique interior lighting, mood themes, and artwork

The matatu’s design, both inside and outside, is inspired by street culture, music, and luxury vibes—perfectly living up to its name, ‘mood’.

Before the launch, the vehicle was prayed over by a preacher, who anointed each seat, a tradition among matatu owners for good luck and safety. Afterward, DJs hyped up the crowd with music as the matatu was paraded through the streets of Nairobi CBD. Videos shared on social media showed the massive crowd dancing and cheering, causing temporary traffic in some areas.

The matatu will primarily operate along the Embakasi route, although there are talks of it occasionally serving the Rongai route too. “Mood” is fully registered and approved by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
This launch isn’t George Ruto’s first major project. He’s known for creating standout matatus, but many believe that “Mood” has raised the bar in the matatu industry—not just in terms of luxury, but also innovation, with its use of solar energy.
