The Kenya African National Union (KANU) has officially unveiled its National Chairman, Hon. Gideon Moi, as its candidate in the forthcoming Baringo senatorial by-election.
The announcement was made on Thursday after what the party described as extensive consultations with leaders, members, and residents of Baringo County.
Moi, a former senator and son of the late President Daniel arap Moi, is seeking a political comeback in a county long considered the bedrock of his family’s political legacy.
He previously served as Baringo senator from 2013 to 2022 before losing the seat to United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate William Cheptumo in the 2022 general election. Cheptumo, who went on to become a close ally of President William Ruto, passed away recently after a short illness, prompting the by election.
KANU Director of Communications Manasse Nyainda said Moi’s nomination reflected the party’s commitment to experienced and people centered leadership at a defining moment for Baringo.
He added that Moi would spearhead a campaign rooted in inclusivity, accountability, and service delivery.
In his acceptance message, Moi expressed gratitude to KANU members and supporters for their confidence, patience, and steadfast support. He pledged to run a campaign that directly addresses the needs of Baringo residents while offering a unifying vision for the future.
KANU leaders believe Moi’s candidacy could re energize the party’s political fortunes both in Baringo and nationally, particularly in the Rift Valley region where UDA has been dominant.
Political observers, however, note that Moi faces a tough contest in a region that overwhelmingly backed President Ruto’s party in 2022.
