Githurai Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Deonysias Mwangi Waithira has tendered his resignation.
In a letter to the Speaker of the Nairobi City County Assembly on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Mwangi said his exit from office will take effect on November 1, 2025.
He cited persistent frustration with the Nairobi County Executive’s failure to implement projects and deliver basic services to the residents of Githurai Ward.
Mwangi noted that despite his consistent efforts on the floor of the Assembly through parliamentary statements, committee work, and oversight mechanisms, both his pleas and those of the residents had been met with neglect, delays, and disregard.
“I, Hon. Deonysias Mwangi Waithira, holder of National Identity Card No. 22580672, do hereby tender my resignation from the elective position of Member of the Third Nairobi City County Assembly for Githurai Ward, having been duly elected and subsequently gazetted vide Gazette Notice No. 9956 of 24th August 2022, under Constituency Code No. 279 and County Assembly Ward Code No. 1391, on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party ticket, with effect from Monday, 1st November 2025,” the letter reads in part.
Mwangi pointed out that the lack of proper mechanisms to enforce Assembly resolutions, coupled with delays in the facilitation of the Ward Office imprest by the County Assembly Service, had hindered the operations and activities of the Githurai Ward Office in carrying out its mandate.
He highlighted dilapidated roads in Githurai, including the Cifu Road, Rurii Powerline Road, Chiro Road, Mucoe Road, Kweche Road, and Kirogo Road.
Mwangi also mentioned the neglection of Githurai Level 3 Hospital, which is understaffed, lacks a perimeter wall, has an incomplete waiting bay, inadequate ablution facilities, and an unfinished maternity wing.
He further cited the failure to commence works on the Githurai Sports Ground, despite the executive’s promise to prioritize it for over two years, and misrepresentation in executive reports.
Mwangi was elected as the Githurai MCA in the 2022 general election under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party.
Mwangi’s resignation will pave the way for a by-election in Githurai Ward, where residents will elect a new MCA.
This comes days after President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga blocked impeachment plans against Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Ruto and Raila intervened directly and held meetings with Nairobi MCAs to halt the impeachment proceedings.
