Gold Mine Collapses In Siaya

A gold mine shaft collapsed in the Abimbo district of Siaya County on Thursday, trapping eight persons while two others escaped with minor injuries.

The artisanal gold miners were on a normal mining excursion when the shaft’s sides fell, trapping them within, according to site manager David Orido.

"After the reinforcing on the shaft's walls collapsed, the shaft disintegrated," he explained.

The miners were ten at the time of the incident, according to Orido, but only two were able to escape the shaft, leaving the remaining eight stuck.

"We have already made measures to excavate the soil that is blocking the entrance to the shaft to enable us to rescue our colleagues," Orido said, while expressing optimism about rescuing the eight.
