Gor Mahia drawn in group of death at CECAFA Kagame Cup

Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia have landed a fiendish group ahead of the 2024 Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Kagame Cup.

Neighbours Tanzania who produced two teams are set host the tournament that is slated to commence on Tuesday 9 to Sunday 21 July.

The games are set to be staged in Dar es Salaam at the Azam Complex in Chamazi which is the home of Azam FC and the newly constructed KMC Stadium in Kinondoni.

The twelve teams will be placed in three different groups with four teams each. The top teams from each group and the best runner-up will automatically qualify for the semi-final stage.

Kenyan representatives Gor Mahia have been drawn against Zambian Super League champions Red Arrows, latest Sudanese champions Al Hilal and Djiboutian outfit Djibouti Telkom FC.

This will be new coach Leonardo Neiva’s first action after being appointed the new K’Ogalo head coach and he will be looking to impress and end Gor Mahia’s 39-year wait for the trophy.

The last time FKF Premier League champions lifted the tourney was back in 1985 when they beat their arch rivals AFC Leopards 2-0 to lift their third Kagame Cup.

K’Ogalo will use the tournament as build up to the CAF Champions League qualifiers that are slated to start in August.
