Record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia could all but seal their 21st league title should they get all the three points when they face KCB on Thursday afternoon at the SportPesa Arena in Murang’a.
The Johnathan McKinstry-coached side will open a twelve-point lead with a win against the Bankers in a result that would leave them needing only one more point from the remaining four matches in the 23/24 Football Kenya Federation Premier League to add a record-extending 21st crown.
This is after closest challengers Kenya Police succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against AFC Leopards on Wednesday, handing Gor a chance to finish the job as early as this weekend against Muhoroni Youth.
Against KCB, K’Ogalo will however be facing a side that has proved to be a bogey side for them in recent times as they have never recorded any wins since McKinstry joined the club at the start of the 22/23 season, drawing twice and losing once in the three games they have played.
It is on the back of those results that McKinstry wants to get the job done before he departs the team following his imminent move to the Gambian national team job.
“KCB have been a thorn in our side for the last couple of years. Since I have been at the club, we have not beaten them. We have played some really good games and probably deserved to get some three points against them but that has not happened yet.
So for us we want to get that monkey off our back and ensure we get the three points which will take us another step closer to the championship,” McKinstry noted ahead of the game.
“It has been a short turnaround because of the midweek fixtures for everybody but we think the players are looking good and are confident being in the position they are in at the table and the run of four straight wins,” he added.
On their part, KCB will be desperate to improve on their form that has yielded only one win in their last six matches.
The Bernard Mwalala-coached side are currently in eleventh place on 36 points, a whooping 27 behind their opponents of the day.
The game will kick off at 3 PM.
