Government Begins Verification Excercise For Coast Region Projects

The National Government Coordination Secretariat (NGCS) has embarked on its Coast Region Field Verification Visits to evaluate the status of various government-sponsored projects.

Led by Joseph Buseiga, Chief of Staff for the Prime Cabinet Secretary’s Office, the team included Coast Regional Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha and local development committees as they toured critical projects in Mombasa.

One of the highlights of the visit was the Dongo Kundu bypass, a Sh40 billion project now open to the public, which connects Miritini and Kwale County.

In addition, the team reviewed the advancements at the Port of Mombasa, particularly the fully operational Container Terminal II, which has boosted capacity from 1.65 million to 2.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

Kenya Ports Authority’s General Manager for Infrastructure Development, Mathews Amuti, outlined the completion of Kipevu Oil Terminal II, featuring four berths designed for large petroleum tankers. He also noted improvements to the Cruise Ship Terminal, which caters to the growing tourism sector.

Buseiga emphasized the importance of these evaluations in addressing potential challenges, promoting accountability, and ensuring the efficient use of public resources.

The secretariat also assessed the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ), where the LPG firm Taifa Gas is being established, signaling fresh investment opportunities.

Another significant project under review was the Liwatoni Kenya Fishing Corporation, currently 45% complete.

The Sh638 million initiative includes a tuna fish hub, with operations starting in 2018. Buseiga urged stakeholders to expedite the tendering process.
