The government has disbursed KSh 52.6 million in compensation to victims of human-wildlife conflict in Kitui County, bringing relief to 26 affected families. The symbolic cheque was handed over during a ceremony held in Mutomo, which also marked the 2025 International Day for Biological Diversity.
The Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, through Wildlife Secretary Dr. Shadrack Ngene, presented the funds on behalf of Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua. The compensation covers injuries, fatalities, and property loss caused by wildlife in the region.
Dr. Ngene underscored the government’s dedication to addressing the human-wildlife conflict (HWC) not only through compensation but also through long-term preventive strategies. “We remain committed to working hand-in-hand with local communities to conserve biodiversity while ensuring their safety and livelihoods are protected,” he said.
The event, themed “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development,” drew key leaders and stakeholders, including Kitui Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani, area MP Dr. Nyamai, Members of the County Assembly, government administrators, and residents.
“This compensation not only brings justice to the affected families but also reinforces our collective commitment to harmonious coexistence with nature,” Deputy Governor Kanani noted.
The International Day for Biological Diversity celebration served as a platform to emphasize the need for integrated conservation and sustainable coexistence efforts. The Ministry affirmed its ongoing collaboration with county governments and partners to enhance habitat protection, community awareness, and early intervention to prevent future conflicts.
