Government Hikes Road Maintenance Levy Fund To Ksh25 Despite Uproar

The government has implemented a proposal to increase the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF) on petrol and diesel by 39%, despite a public outcry.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has reviewed the fuel price adjustment, capping the levy at Sh25, up from Sh18.

The hike aims to address the funding shortfall of Sh157 billion since 2016. The State had initially proposed an annual maintenance rate of Sh34 per litre, but opted for a phased approach as the economy recovered from the effects of Covid.

A public participation exercise was conducted by former Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who assured members of the public that the new levy would be shelved for further deliberations. However, it appears that the proposal has been implemented, despite concerns from motorists.

The news comes as prices of Petrol, Diesel, and Kerosene have dropped by KShs.1.00, KShs.1.50, and KShs.1.30 respectively in the latest review.
